PATENT APPLICATIONS IN PORTUGAL HAVE TRIPLED OVER THE LAST DECADE
Patent applications filed with the European Patent Office (EPO) and originated in Portugal have increased 23,1% in 2019, the second year in a row of strong growth (in 2018 the growth was 47,3%).
In the past year, companies, research institutions and Portuguese universities have filed 272 patent applications with the European Patent Office, the highest number ever. Over the last decade patent applications originated in Portugal have tripled (+236%). (see chart “The growth rate in patent applications at the EPO”).
This increase is mostly due to the significant growth in 10 of the 15 most important technological areas in the country. Medical technology has been the area with the largest number of patent applications in 2019 (22 patent applications, +83%), followed by the pharmaceutical area (19 patent applications, +35,7%) and "furniture, games" (18 patent applications, +50). The most significant growth was registered in the areas of "information technologies for management", rising from 1 to 10 applications, “control (machinery)”, also rising from 1 to 10 applications and "electrical machinery, devices, energy" rising from 4 to 14 applications.
